Forms

A form is a predetermined series of movements performed by an individual which displays a combination of body and mind development. Forms contain from twenty to fifty positions, each of which involves either a block or an attack, or a combination of blocks and attacks. There is only one correct way to do a form. Each move is specific and therefore must begin and end in the correct position with the correct transition between movements.

Executing forms properly requires five separate disciplines of the student:

1st - Learn the form and do all the motions correctly. This is accuracy of movement.

2nd - Movements must be fast, that is not to say that you race through the form with careless motions. The speed is that of the hand or foot that is involved in a particular movement.

3rd - Moves must be strong. The strength required is not achieved by tensing the muscles, grinding the teeth, or bowing the back. The strength is that of a well coordinated effort that is brought to focus at the conclusion of the movement.

4th - Moves must be focused. This should be a focus of mind, body and spirt.

5th - The fifth discipline is that of balance. You must be balanced at all times.

Demonstrating a Tang-Soo-Do form is not entirely dissimilar to the ballet. The Tang-Soo-Do form requires that the movements be done in a prescribed manner with the prescribed rhythm and end in prescribed position.

MUSICAL FORMS:

Musical forms put a new dimension to forms practice. It requires many hours of repetitious work to properly train muscles to perform Martial Art techniques. Doing musical forms is a fun and interesting way for advanced students to get the required practice they need, to learn these techniques but in a modern, personalized manner.
